As the cultural season of autumn begins, here are three events that no culture vulture should miss this September.

Uitmarkt

In the last weekend of August, this annual festival will attract more than 450,000  theatre, music, book and film lovers alike, and is one of the most popular cultural events and the traditional opening of the cultural season. The festival feature more than 450 performances by over 2,000 artists, classical to kid-friendly, hip-hop to dance and theatre to jazz – there’s something for everyone. Amsterdam’s MuseumpleinLeidseplein and the surrounding area provide the setting for the festival’s performances, events, stands and stalls. Free

Lockdown Festival

At the tail end of the music festival season, this outdoor bass music cultural gathering will deliver a healthy helping of whomp to the new cultural season. This year’s Lockdown will once again invade Amsterdam’s NDSM Wharf for a full day of soul-rattling beats on Sunday 1 September. Tickets from €30

Nuit Blanche

From 7pm on 28 September through to 7am the following morning, this night-time cultural festival returns with obscure art, creative experiments and plenty of weird and wonderful fun at surprising locations in Amsterdam. This year, the majority of Nuit Blanche will be held at locations in the Red Light District and surrounding area. The annual celebration of the Amsterdam underground and avant-garde scene encourages cultural organisations to step outside of their comfort zones and invariably produces unique events and an unforgettable night on the town! Tickets from €15
