Valkenburg Velvet Cave Christmas market

Nick Harding from Which Motorhome’s unusual pre-Christmas surprise…

Specialist leisure vehicle journalist Nick Harding had a slightly unusual pre-Christmas surprise for his family – a motorhome trip to the amazing Christmas market town of Valkenburg in southern Holland. Says Nick: “It was a perfect plan. We used Stena’s overnight Harwich-Hook of Holland crossing, so an easy-going two and a half hour drive across Holland to Valkenburg gave us time to pitch the motorhome at Camping Den Driesch (www.campingdendriesch.nl) before strolling down the hill to meet Christmas full-on!

“The small town of Valkenburg really was Christmas come to life. Not just the shops and stalls, but also the underground caves – one hosting its own Christmas market, another an awesome display of sand carvings of biblical scenes right up to a whole city of Bethlehem.

“How could we beat all this? No kidding, we sat down for a Mexican meal in the almost surreal surroundings of Restaurant El Castillo (www.castillo.nl).

“As I say, it was something of a perfect Christmas trip. Did I mention it rained solidly all day on the Saturday? We barely noticed.”

Nick’s write-up of the Swift Sundance and trip to Valkenburg appears in the March issue of Which Motorhome, on sale from mid-February (see also www.outandaboutlive.co.uk). You can also follow Nick’s musings on the world of motorhomes via www.motorhomeblogger.com
